“My teacher is like my second mother” and “My school feels like my second home” are frequent refrains among Isha Vidhya students.

Some are inspired to emulate their teachers and give back as teachers themselves, offering the same dedicated care and attention to their students’ academic and overall development that they received.

In this newsletter celebrating Teachers’ Day (5 September), some of our alumni who now teach at Isha Vidhya recount their teaching journeys.

“Seeing my students win at district-level and state-level events is a dream come true for me.
As an Isha Vidhya student, I won at the national level in athletics and hope to train my students to follow in my footsteps. As a teacher, I try to build a friendly, respectful, and supportive relationship with my students by listening to their ideas and concerns and encouraging them. Their enthusiasm, participation, and joy are reassuring for me as a teacher.”

“I wait to go back to school to see my students, even when I’m on leave for just two days.
Ironically, I became a teacher unintentionally, but interacting with my students, being affectionately called ‘Miss’, and playing a significant role in their progress made me realize how special this profession is. In retrospect, I now fully understand how devotedly my teachers taught and honed me. Returning to my alma mater as a teacher has turned out to be something very meaningful in my life.”

“I became emotional when I saw a video of my student imitating me
and pretending to be a teacher at home. She described me in minute detail to her mother, which made me realize how closely students observe their teachers and how, in some way, teachers become their role models. As a student, I used to observe how my teachers cared for students, not only in academics but also in their overall development, which inspired me to become a teacher.”

“I keenly observed my teachers
when I resolved to emulate them and become a teacher myself. Watching how they encouraged students, understood their difficulties, motivated them, and helped them become self-assured heightened my respect for them and for the profession. Hearing the students call me ‘Teacher’ on my first day was a very special feeling. I find it fulfilling when my students heed my bidding and participate in class activities with self-assurance, without fear of being wrong.”

“Watching my teachers teach wholeheartedly ignited a desire in me to become a teacher at Isha Vidhya.
On my first day as a teacher, I was nervous, excited, and thrilled, and was in seventh heaven when my students responded positively to my first lesson. Sharing space in the staff room with my erstwhile teachers felt a bit odd initially, but it always makes me feel proud to be with them and emulate them.”

“My interest in teaching developed because my classmates appreciated the way I explained lessons to them
and would often tell me to consider teaching professionally. Besides, since my mother is a teacher, I was drawn to teaching. I have a deep emotional connection with Isha Vidhya, having studied there from class 2 to 12. I appreciate the values, teaching methods, and positive environment that shaped me and am grateful for the chance to teach here and pass them on to my students.”

“From childhood, I yearned to become a teacher.
I felt inspired by what I learned from my teachers, the process of teaching, and being among students. It was an unforgettable and touching moment when I was called ‘Teacher’ for the first time by the students at Isha Vidhya. My dream had come true. Taking my first lesson before a responsive class of students reminded me of the efforts my teachers put in to help me reach this milestone.”
