Isha Vidhya celebrates the girl child every day. Girls make up 49.5% of the school’s students, and 68% of them study on scholarships. In an environment that offers equal opportunities to all, they often surpass themselves, and fewer adolescent girls drop out from Isha Vidhya than the average in rural India.

“My love for sports outweighs everything else. Hearing my mother talk about her experiences as a kho-kho player inspired me to embrace sports, and I won bronze in Silambam at my first national-level competition. My attention span used to be short, and I couldn’t sit and study for long. But Silambam, which demands complete concentration on the opponent’s moves, has helped me do better in my studies. I also play and love football, a game that banishes all distractions.”

“I constantly aspire to gain more exposure, explore new opportunities, and learn from different experiences, which helps me discover new interests, improve my skills, and understand my strengths better. I love physics, and Carl Sagan inspires me. I discovered the joy of sports in Class 8, when I won first place at a school-level contest without any training. Special after-school coaching sessions for girls preparing for an event have supported my sporting journey. My extracurricular activities have made me stronger, more focused, and better prepared to face any situation.”

“I took up sports because I had seen the joy they brought my classmates, and I wanted to feel it too. My P.E. teacher helps me improve my skills and aim for high scores. I know diligent practice is crucial to winning, so I visualize myself performing well at competitions while I train. A strong shot put score in the elimination round got me selected for the state-level competition. I keep my prizes in a showcase, where they remind me of my achievements and motivate me to keep striving for victory.”

“I always aim to give my best in whatever I do. I’m grateful for my sponsored education, and I focus more on learning than on marks, but my high scores make my mother happy. Experiencing victory and defeat in sports has made me more disciplined, self-assured, and competitive. It has taught me teamwork, patience, and how to face challenges. Basketball players inspire me to strive and stay focused.”

“I want to be a successful athlete, compete in the Olympics, and win medals for my motherland. I like playing football because running continuously during the game is good exercise and contributes to my athletic goals. I watch videos of athletes such as P.T. Usha and Vithya Ramraj, and I draw inspiration from P.T. Usha’s quote: ‘Winning is great, but real joy comes from the journey toward success.’ I now apply the single-mindedness I bring to sports to my studies, too.”

“I learned to play chess in a class organized for students in my village, and I took to the game easily. Although I lost my first competition, I wasn’t discouraged. Instead, I observed other players and improved my game. My first victory made me realize I was good at chess, and since then I have worked tirelessly to improve. Chess has made me more confident and improved my approach to learning.”

“Kabaddi keeps me disciplined and courageous. It is a rough sport, but it has made me stronger, fitter, and more patient. Although my team lost in my first competition when I was in Class 8, the experience made me determined to improve my game. My yearning to compete at the national level spurs me to train relentlessly, and the daily P.E. period at school has been a boon to my training.”
